What Kind Of Mattress Do You Need?

Do you prefer to sleep on your side? Maybe on your back or stomach? Or maybe a mixture of all three throughout the night? Does your mattress match and support your current sleeping style? There should be adequate support and comfort offered from your mattress each night. Let’s break down the three most common sleeping styles and the mattresses that are the best fit to offer the best sleep possible.

Back

If you’re a back sleeper, you need good support and firmness from your mattress. If your mattress isn’t firm enough, you may notice that your back constantly hurts. When your back isn’t receiving adequate support, your spine can get out of alignment, causing discomfort and even more severe problems in the future. Your ideal mattress firmness is one that provides enough softness to eliminate pressure points, but that still has great support to promote alignment. Usually a firmness level in the 4-7 range is suggested.

Side

If you sleep on your side, you may find that you tend to move around quite a bit throughout the night instead of staying in the same position.  You may fall sleep with one or both legs straight and wake up to find one or both legs bent. If this sounds like you, you need a soft to medium level firmness, usually something in the 3-6 range out of 10.  A soft mattress with extra support will relieve the pressure points on your back and neck, offering a better night’s sleep.

Stomach

A stomach sleeper’s number one priority when searching for a new mattress needs to be support. Your torso/stomach will apply the majority of the pressure to your mattress, and this is why you need a mattress that offers support throughout your entire body.

Stomach sleepers need to be as flat as possible while sleeping on their mattress. Even something as simple as a pillow could throw your spine out of alignment, causing pain and discomfort. Typically stomach sleepers need a mattress in the 5-7 range with some others requiring a slightly hard or softer feel depending on the individual.
